Medlar
The medlar tree is loaded
With rich nutritious fruits
They will rot away in winter
And fall to fertilize the roots
Not sweet enough to fancy
Nor delicious to see
Merely fit to serve the cycle
To let the tree to be a tree
So sing to the praise of sorrow
A song to honour the decay
So we can sing again tomorrow
Of things that rot away today

Let the tree be a tree, kan ook vogges mij.
Mooi onderwerp Michael!
I read the song out loud several times and agree with sister Beppie: it´s a beautiful poem! I can´t fault it in anyway. It has exactly the right words and rhythm. It even has the raait zpelling! I had never heard of a tree called a medlar, at first I thought you meant someone who meddles in other people´s business. I´d like to hear you sing this song one day!
zet een komma achter 'cycle' en de zin kan zowel geïnterpreteerd worden als 'fit to serve the cycle and fit to let the tree...' als ook 'fit to serve the cycle. Let the tree...'
Ik zou die tweede 'to' weglaten. Want volgens mij is het 'to let be' en niet 'to let to be'.
Maar wie ben ik? I can no English. Two lead the three bee a try, vind ik ook mooi klinken.
Sing to the praise of sorrow
A song to honour the decay
And sing again tomorrow
Of things that rot today.
