Boeregenen of boerengenen?

I need help with the title, because my Dutch grammar is a leaky affair.

Our kids are bilingual - they speak fluent English and Chinese. I have occasionally been teaching them important Dutch words, like "fiets" en "potverdriedubbeltjes." In fact, scolding children in Dutch comes easy.

I can't sing for shit. Really. I am probably tone-deaf, but being decent with rhythms helps hide a lot of inabilities when you play music together with friends.

In In A Green Field, they mistakenly asked me to do backing vocals once. I warned the band not to go there, but we needed more vocal harmonies in our songs. My personal microphone was mysteriously removed again by the next rehearsal. But I wasn't embarrassed; I felt redeemed.

I sang at our wedding, but I was playback'ing while a real (female) singer sang live behind the curtains. She entered stage after the first verse, much to the entertainment of our guests ("Katelyn plays the drums like a man, and Erik sings like a girl"). If I had been the one singing, then the room would have cleared quicker than if there had been a raging fire.

Yet, in the private quiet of the children's room, I sing lullabies to the kids. This includes many Dutch all-time favorites like Poesje Mauw, Ik Zag Twee Beren en of course Slaap Kindje Slaap.

Today Elsa (6) sings Frozen songs, often extremely loud and very much out-of-tune, and Aiden (3) does everything Elsa does, so we are close to living the kind of nightmare that I made fun of only 6 years ago...

I started wondering, is this nature or nurture?

Recently, and much to our surprise, Elsa started singing Aiden to sleep, and she decided to sing what she has heard...

The next day, Aiden kept singing the song as well. He is clearly influenced by Elsa's version and her lyrical genius. But he actually sounds better - in terms of melody...

But, listen again... They both sing "Doar boiten loopt..." Their Dutch comes with a strong, natural Brabants-farmer's accent. Obviously, I never sang it like that, I have been conditioned over the many years.

So, this is firmly genetics! Our kids are true Termeers, their roots grow deep, down in het Branbantse land.

And after corona is over, they will come to audition with Wooden Ships.

Adapt and compromise

The last priest

Dressed in robes of former glory
He stands in front of empty seats
So much for joy, this holy story
In muffled noise from busy streets

The Father, Son and Holy Ghost
Go hence and forth between the walls
However loud their names he calls
It looks it’s them being missed the most

The holy mass all set and done
No soul was lost and none was won
The Amen firm, yet too unheard
There’s lots of flock, but none to herd

So much for sorrow, this sad story
We sing our songs in venues small
Bouncing up and down the village hall
We rival God for absent glory

More Songs About Buildings And Other Things".

Rock and roll

I’ve been reading in the paper
It says space itself rocks
Though extremely rigid, it quivers
And makes a “Virgo”-sensor talk
Telling minor things are happening
Such as: two black holes collide
Sending shockwaves through the universe
Causing laser-beams to light

It needs a macrocosm mega-quake
To bring a Virgo-beam to shake

Well, I know a thing or two of things colliding
I’ve seen love in no time shrink
Sending shockwaves through my system
Though I don’t think her sensor gave a blink
For when it comes to being rigid
She is the expert in the field
Her heart needing mayor collisions
To make it´s Virgo-sensor squeal

Massive black holes may get merged
Next to her Virgo unobserved
Giant galaxies may shrink
Her heart won´t even give a wink

Hail to all of those colliding
Having their supernova quakes
They might find some consolation knowing
They’re not the only one to shake
Out there giant things are rocking
Causing minor ripples in space time
No reason why some feeble rolling
Will bring about a change of any kind

Massive black holes may get merged
Next to her Virgo unobserved
Giant galaxies may shrink
Her heart won´t even give a wink
It needs a macrocosm mega-quake
To make a Virgo-beam to shake

Het is de eerste van een serie "Seven medium sad to really very very sad songs, inspired by famous classical compositions".

Another Fotheringhay

“How often she has gazed from castle windows all
And watch the daylight passing within her captive walls” *
Sounds of grief, sounds of sorrow, prelude to the light of dawn
It will come sometime tomorrow that the castle is all gone

“Her days of precious freedom, forfeited long before
To live such fruitless years behind a guarded door” *
Wars of love, wars of hate, times can be pretty rough
The most bitter of all fates: not to be loved or not to love

“Tomorrow at this hour she will be far away
Much farther than these islands or the lonely Fotheringhay” *
Tomorrow at this hour, I hope to live to see the day
I will walk the empty grounds of former castle Fotheringhay

P.S. The first blow missed her neck and struck the back of her head. The second blow severed the neck, except for a small bit of sinew, which the executioner cut through using the axe. Afterward, he held her head aloft and declared, "God save the Queen." At that moment, the auburn tresses (vert. kastanjebruine lokken) in his hand turned out to be a wig and the head fell to the ground, revealing that Mary had very short, grey hair." (bron: Wikipedia)

Turn up the fire

One and a half to two degrees
That’s what the warm-up’s gonna be
“We have a treaty!” Cheering shouts
Happy faces, all are proud
Succeeded to turn our fate around
Safe and sound on solid ground

All is lost, hopes are gone
No grazing zebras on my lawn
No climate change and melting ice
No backyard birds of paradise
Now that they have capped the global rise
They will fail to carbonize at a costly price

Turn up the fire one degree higher

One and a half to two degrees?
N.G.O. says: it’s more like three
A sparkle of sunlight through the clouds!
Three degrees can mean global droughts
I might still be welcoming migrating crowds
The extra degree could help us all out!

Turn up the fire only one degree higher

Drawing circles

A simple question is put to me
What is “a good man” meant to be?
“Task force subjectification” wants to know
I’m not making this up: bussiness is slow

So what is your bit? And what is mine?
I’m drawing circles all the time
The one that’s drawn along my skin:
Six inches radius, has peace within

But in every other circle that I draw
There’s words and quarrel, all-out war
And further down, not hard to tell
A frightful glimpse of Dante´s hell

Repelling circles, magnet hearts
While closing in, they bounce apart
The question’s not “how am I to be?”
But all the more pressing towards WE

So let us gaze towards the stars
And draw a circle infinitely far
In search of peace for subject WE
To match the peace inside of me
And share a devine tranquility

Medlar

The medlar tree is loaded
With rich nutritious fruits
They will rot away in winter
And fall to fertilize the roots

Not sweet enough to fancy
Nor delicious to see
Merely fit to serve the cycle
To let the tree to be a tree

So sing to the praise of sorrow
A song to honour the decay
So we can sing again tomorrow
Of things that rot away today

Mornings are for sunrise

Mornings are for sunrise
Enjoy your suns at noon
Howl at your moons at night time
Love always leaves too soon

There are many reasons
However faint or small
To make a life worth living
And music gives them all

Doomsday party

Houston calling, there’s an asteroid on the move
Hopes are falling that it will fit in with the groove
People wailing, fatal collision, head on
Me complaining, just released this million dollar song :(
Time is ticking, we won’t see another dawn
Happy doomsday! We’ll go out dancing on the lawn

Hey there fatty, get your six pack on the floor
Hello beauty, do the Mephisto waltz once more
Filthy rich men, jive all your money in the air
Demure women, do a lap dance, pick a chair
Drop your weapons, drown your differences in wine
See what happens, we’ll kick the bucket feeling fine

Houston calling, they’d got the coordinates all wrong
Miscalculating, declination estimates too strong
Chances rising, we’ll live to see another day…
…with filthy poor men, dignities thrown away
Turn up the music, let’s pretend that no one knows
Lest we’d lose it, anything’s on if nothing goes

Song van de maand

Proper education

There are some things I learned in life
Not everything goes smoothly
There are some minor hiccups
Tiles flying off the roof (eeee!)

Sometimes you hit the sweet spot (right on!)
More often you are late (oops!)
Not everyone is friendly (goodbye)
But some do compensate
Well, hello there...
…can I get you something to drink?
Don’t mind if you do.

You can think your good at singing/playing/writing/whatever
While others would say “...uhm, NOT”
It’s best to count your blessings
And enjoy the ones you’ve got

There are things still I have to learn
Like how to cope with hate
Maybe I should turn to YouTube
For a lesson “How to relate” (in five easy steps!)

And when I’m finally done with learning
I will simply close my eyes
They ‘ll say: “Indeed, this man is quite dead
But he is also very wise.”

Virgin soil

In the lone Alaskan mountains
One can see the massive men
With their big beards and big bellies
Drinking beer right from the can

Welding steel machineries
Spending days on heavy toil
Pushing dirt through a water hole
Looking for gold in virgin soil

And the sun is never gentle
No women in their sight
And the diesel´s doing dixie
Pushing way into the night

Digging for gold in virgin soil

Midnight empty motorway
Dire Straights are on the air
The GPS is set for going home
But frankly I don´t care

A car resembles a mother´s womb
Destination yet unknown
An empire of solitude
Perfectly happy on your own

And with every junction passing
A stronger longing does uncoil
The exit I’ll be taking
It will lead to virgin soil

Digging for gold in virgin soil

Now passing the outskirts
Of my old, familiar town
I’d like to turn the wheel
But somehow I’m backing down

Digging for gold in virgin soil

...well I’ve got no beard... I don’t drink beer anyway...
...and this ain’t Alaska, is it... I do have a belly though...
...but massive… no

Way to go

The climbing wall looks easy
If any colour is okay
But if you need to pick one
The yellow route would save the day
The red one too, though tricky
Grips scattered everywhere
But look who’s going for the brown ones
That aren't even there
Way to go

Driving towards a destination
One would choose the fastest lane
Still, you could trail behind an LGV
You would get there all the same
And if you’re in for trouble
The hard shoulder is your mode
But look who’s struggling forward
In the grass beside the road

You can’t go the easy way
When there’s trouble in your genes
While on your way to Shambles
You end up in Smithereens
Way to go

Song van de maand

Er blijft weinig verborgen voor Wooden Ships. Een voorbeeldje staat hier.

Ins and outs

Jeeves, the name is Jeeves and I will take you through the week
As a valet I know my masters whereabouts
My lord thinks he’s a mystery, an enigma so to speak
He‘d wish, but I know all the ins and outs
Well, he starts breathing on Mondays
And he breaths on Tuesdays too
On Wednesdays his grace tends his frequent breathing to pursue
No different on Thursdays
And on Friday just the same
An addiction that through weekends he painstakingly sustains

If you think that this is odd, well you’re in for a surprise
More ins and outs his eminence can’t deny
Though he never will admit it, in fact he‘d eye you with despise
Avoid the subject and rather tell a lie
But he takes a pee on Monday
And on Tuesday he does fart
Even last Wednesday my lordship took a crap with all his heart
And he eats and drinks on Thursdays
And on Friday anything goes
And what his worship does in weekends…
Well, you don’t even want to know

(He sings! He really does!)

What is on the news today?
Hold your breath, viral death
Out on the streets and creeping up to you
Oh, thank God, it’s far away

Waving flags, come to slaughter you
Oh, thank God, it‘s nowhere near

The scenes of madness, the apocalyptic views
Give way to game shows on our celeb TV zoo
Reduced to sidekicks in our daily fun revue

What is on the news today?
Russian troops, science scoop
Trouble in Uganda, baby panda
Facebook fake, tectonic quake
And more and even more will come your way
In just a minute, after the break

     Your life is imperfect
You will have lots of friends if you drink alcohol
     Your life is imperfect
You will have a slim waistline if you wear this scent
     Your life is imperfect

What is on the news today?
Hold your heart, maybe art
Surely music can comfort you
And play the gloom away

Be bop alua

You’re rich enough not to believe
In a better afterlife
You’re smart enough to fear no hell
Besides a grumpy wife
You have no martyrs and no saints
No holy places to go to
Nor any Sunday chants and prayers
Besides be bop alua a whop bam boo

Whilst a converted non believer
- Religion’s out of time -
Something unexplained keeps itching
Distant church bells chime
For you would like to know the answers
Life’s questions bother you
At times you envy the believers
They’re fine with be bop alua a whop bam boo

You have put your faith in science
In devoted ecstasy
When a missionary space probe
Sets foot on comet 67P
And you read the sacred pages
Life and works of St. Philae
Looking for clues and recent answers
On to be or not to be (bop alua a whop bam boo)
