Aiden loves trains. Oliver asks Aiden why he hasn't been on the double-decker train in Nederland, when his mama and papa did go. Aiden thinks a long time. I whisper to Aiden: "Because you weren't born yet." Aiden, confidently to Oliver: "Because I was in Borneo."
We have a video chat with the family in France and Florida. Afterwards, I ask Elsa, "Why did you put on a baby voice?" She smiles, "Because then I sound very cute."
We pass a Buddhist wake. Aiden was told earlier what that means, and explains it to us: "A person passed away. That means he died. Maybe he was old, or sick."
Elsa contributes as well, "or he just got run over by a car."
Aiden: "I have to pee, but I can't go to the toilet. I have to keep it in... But then I get kidney bones!" (stones)
We have a rooster living nearby. Every morning it crows. I tell Elsa, "The rooster is telling us: respect your mother, she made your breakfast, she is trying her best to make you grow big and strong. The rooster says that you should not take that lightly, but that you should be happy about it." Elsa: "How does the rooster say all that with just one cockeldoodledoo?"
Aiden made a joke. First he says very loudly: "I am NOT in the shower!" Then he moves his clenched little fist over his head, like an invisible showerhead. His eyes open wide. "Oohh... It is raining! Hahaha!" Then, he explains the joke to us: "He was actually in the shower! Hahaha!"
Aiden: "I'm a water horse with rainbow power!"
Elsa: "I'm a white horse with white power!"
Erik: "Eh..."
Elsa: "I think Jesus liked to eat cheese... Because he is called Cheeses Christ."
Aiden in a very serious voice: "Do you know what is the best part of a chocolate croissant?" Some silence follows, and then with a big grin: "The CHOCOLATE!"
Aiden watches me stretching my hamstrings. He observes, "You have very long legs!" After some thought, he adds "So, you are a daddy-longlegs, hahaha..." (a 'daddy-longlegs' is a common spider)
Elsa cuts off some dead leaves from our plant at the balcony. We praise her for her gardening skills. She asks, "Papa, shall I water this plant as well?" I tell her that I already did, earlier today. She walks away with the scissors in her hand, telling herself in a very satisfying way: "Okay! That means that my job here is done."
Sometimes children are simply too explicit. Elsa: "I kind'a swallowed this candy, but then I almost choked, so then I went like cough-cough, and out it came, but I was wearing a mask, so..."
Aiden: "Choose a color mama."
Katelyn: "Okay: red."
Aiden: "I thought you would choose green, so let's pretend you chose green."
Aiden and I are drawing words from a stack, and then we make a sentence with the word... I pick the word 'and', and say, "And... You and me will ride on the bicycle tomorrow." Aiden picks the next word: 'my'. "My... Hmmm... I am going to this very large place, where they have a lot of apple juice and then I drink so much of that apple juice, and then... Hmmm (some silence)... I am going to a shopping mall... Hmmm (more silence)... My toy is green!"
Katelyn brings Aiden to a toilet in a shopping mall. She asks Aiden to try and reach for the running water at the tap without carrying. He stands on his tippy toes and stretches and stretches to wash his hadns. A lady watches and cheers for him when he finally gets his hands wet. The lady says, "Wow, you are tall!" Aiden very happily answers, "Yes! I am already 4 years old, you see how tall I am? And do you know why that is? It is because I drink a lot of milk!"
Aiden explains how schooling works: "You first go to Explorers, then Adventurers, Discoverers and then Researchers and then finally K2. After that, you go to Primary 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Primary 6 is the last. So then you stay at Primary 6."
Katelyn helps: "then 4 years secondary school, 2 years A-levels and, then there is University which can take as long as 6 years if you want to be a doctor or dentist."
Aiden: "Yes, it is six years, because it is just like primary school."
Katelyn: "Hmmm, and, after university?" Aiden: "Well then you go to work. Every day you can work together with your papa or mama. Oh, you will have to buy a laptop for me! Wait... It is okay, I can use the doggy laptop."
And, he shows what he means:
We're talking about getting the covid jab. Aiden: "What? Are we eating covid jam?"
Elsa in a half panic, "No Aiden! It means they will injection us!"
